Position Summary
We are seeking a self-motivated Flight Test Instrumentation (FTI) engineer to join the Aviation Engineering Centre (AEC) FTI team at Boscombe Down in support of Test and Evaluation of rotary and fixed wing aircraft.
The scope of the work focuses on design, integrating, calibrating, maintaining and fault finding instrumentation hardware and software for aircraft systems to engineering specifications in accordance with program requirements. It also includes non-aircraft, Royal Navy (RN) and Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) ship installations, supporting Air Flow Air Pattern (AFAP) and Ship Aircraft Interface (SAI) trial activities, with bespoke Ship Instrumentation Systems (SIS) ahead of Ship Helicopter Operating Limits (SHOL) trials.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Support FTI maintenances /fault finding and flight test activities
- Design, implement, and maintain Airborne Data Acquisition Systems(ADAS) and SIS used to condition, monitor, and record data required for project delivery
- Utilize in house developed software applications for specialized calibration/processing and transfer of flight test data
- Adhere to flight test policies and procedures to ensure quality and safe data acquisition and operations
- Provide FTI direction to Technicians, Electricians, and Mechanics
- Collaborate with A, including Flight Test Engineers, Instrumentation Labs, Standards and Calibration, Aircraft Coordinators, etc
Skill, Knowledge and Abilities
- Multiple levels of experience will be considered with at least 3 years in Flight Test, Test and Evaluation, Avionics or Electrical, etc
- Knowledge in the following instrumentation sensor applications: strain gages, accelerometers, pressure transducers, thermocouples, RTDs, pitot-static systems, etc
- Familiarity with following bus formats: 1553-B, ARINC-429, RS-232/422/485
- Familiarity with airborne data acquisition systems
- Ability to read, understand, and create electrical drawings
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, or equivalent software for creating, modifying or updating electrical drawings
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Software Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Project)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work effectively within a team
- Good interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to work unusual shift patterns as necessary.
- Deployable to other locations including on Ships at sea
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs unassisted
- Must be able to climb ladders/ work stands, potentially working at height, to perform work activities on the FTI/SIS instrumentation on aircraft or ship
