NATS (National Air Traffic Services) are undergoing significant business transformation to adopt service orientated ways of working and embrace new technology. At the same time, the aviation industry is also undergoing unprecedented change as operators of new types of air vehicles take to the skies.
Their role is to enable the safe integration of all air vehicles including air taxis, drones operating beyond the visual line of sight and commercial space craft. Your role will be to help us design the necessary technical architecture.
We're looking for someone with industry leading experience of digital transformation and enterprise architecture techniques. A team player, with great communication skills who will create the high-level design for the integration of what we call 'Unified Traffic Management' or 'UTM' technologies into the air traffic management (ATM) organisation.
Key responsibilities:
- Deliver a prototype architectural model of a minimum viable solution UTM - ATM integration. Where the architecture shall be benefit focussed and achievable within the time and cost needs of new and existing customers.
- Lead the analysis of the respective roles and responsibilities, of relevant stakeholders in the organisation in delivering the capabilities necessary to support the provision of UTM services to customers.
- Lead the analysis and modelling of the activities and process flows conducted by these
stakeholders and where appropriate prepare architectural content and views to reflect this understanding and or defines where stakeholders may need to change what they do. - Lead the analysis of the information used and exchanged between stakeholders.
- Provide assurance that the architectural views and accompanying content are credible,
sustainable and have, as far as is reasonably possible, the stakeholder's support. - Make sure that the modelled capabilities include non-standard situations and any specific processes to support the transition to UTM.
- Make sure that the modelled capability includes any understood risk (safety or security) along with the processes and requirements needed to mitigate their impact, identifying them appropriately.
- Define how the necessary technologies and services can be implemented.
- Articulate the value proposition within the UTM - ATM ecosystem.
Autonomy within the role:
- Unconstrained by traditional ATM thinking, the incumbent will have autonomy to propose justified changes to enable the integration of UTM.
- The incumbent must be able to work independently but also able to manage and coordinate the contributions of others, liaising with key internal and external stakeholders
- The role will require interaction with a diverse range of stakeholders, and to identify, assess and resolve complex issues and interdependencies. The incumbent must exhibit a mind-set that reflects appreciation of the 'bigger picture' or the 'ecosystem' as a whole.
Your Experience, Qualification & Skills:
- Experience of developing architectures for large and/or complex organisations, programme,
projects and/or systems/service architectures - Excellent facilitation skills - enabling the elicitation of knowledge and information from a broad range of stakeholders
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to quickly discern the critical facts amidst the noise, and avoid unnecessary complexity
- Strong verbal, listening, written and visual communication skills; able to interact effectively at all levels of seniority, in a variety of formats
- Able to build relationships and develop credibility with stakeholders quickly, with a
demonstrated capability to resolve conflict - Collaborative and driven working style with a focus on delivering outcomes; able to work with limited supervision and in disparate multi-functional teams
- Sophisticated understanding of the role and application of architectures, requirements
analysis, and requirements management in the systems engineering lifecycle - Knowledge and experience of applying service orientation, ideally in the context of the ITIL service lifecycle
- Knowledge and experience of applying architectural frameworks, methodologies and
modelling techniques such as TOGAF, MoDAF, NAF and SysML - The job holder will have a numerate background; typically, they will hold a good honours degree in a relevant Engineering, Science, or Mathematics subject - or equivalent professional experience (applicants not holding the expected qualification but who have undertaken structured Engineering training or apprenticeship recognised by a professional body, and have extensive engineering experience will be considered)
- An understanding of the air traffic domain or similar related domains and technologies would be desirable but not essential
